Readers in Oregon no doubt know that though there is not currently a spinoff of the 1960s cult science fiction series "Star Trek" on television, the show's fictional universe, with its space ships, exotic aliens and interplanetary adventures remains popular with millions of fans around the world. Maybe some readers of this family law blog count themselves among the legions of "trekkies."
Most Star Trek fans confine their enthusiasm to watching the various TV series and movies, and perhaps attending conventions. But some fans, such as one British man, carry their Trek affection much further. The man loves Star Trek so much that he transformed his apartment into a model of the titular spaceship from the series "Star Trek Voyager." He estimates that he has spent 30,000 British pounds on the project, which allows him to live among Trek-like computer consoles, flashing wall panels and even a mock "transporter."
But now it appears the man's mission has been grounded. His apartment is owned by his wife, from whom he has been separated since 1994. Now the couple is getting a divorce, and the wife wants to sell the apartment.
The man says he is heartbroken by the impending loss of his "life's work." Rebuilding the Star Trek theme in a new apartment would cost at least 100,000 pounds, or more than $150,000, he estimated.
While unusual, this case demonstrates how division of property in a divorce can yield unexpected outcomes if you are not prepared. An experienced divorce attorney can help clarify your financial situation and try to reach a settlement both sides can agree on.
